It's been an interesting day.

I've been creating controversy in the real as well as the virtual world, and I am pretty happy with myself. There's nothing more liberating than to tell the honest truth to people who just don't expect it. Where lying can make life interesting- and I know all about this, always writing fiction-, telling the truth can often make for much more exciting situations. But I won't go into the details as I have had enough of this post-modern exhibitionism for one day.

I also went to watch 'Mamma Mia', the musical with Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep. It was such an excellent film, one where you could see that the money had been spent and the quality pursued and, in my opinion, absolutely realised. Let me make one thing clear: this is not a film for 'cool' people. If you're reading and you're my ex Peter (yeah, I know, fat chance), let me save you the fiver, this film is just not for you. It was a tall order to turn what was essentially designed as a play into a film, and in places it might have cracked slightly, but on the whole, I can honestly say that it has been a long time since I left the cinema feeling so... well, so happy.
The inherent 'silliness' of it all was carried beautifully by actors so respected that they can afford to make fools of themselves; when it is them, it's just endearing. And talk about 'feel good' movies- usually mediocre romantic comedies with predictable endings- "Mamma Mia" actually made me feel good. At the end of the film I had that stupid, drunk smile on my face. I wanted to go up and hug the other people at the cinema (mostly old British couples; it was the American version and not the dubbed one). Go see it. A little bit of forgetting our coolness does us all good.
